Lois Wright Morton received her Ph.D. in Development Sociology at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.  She is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology in the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University.  Dr. Morton’s areas of research include civic structure, rural communities, rural quality of life, community based watershed management, and population health. She is author of the book Health Care Restructuring: Market Theory vs Civil Society (2001) and co-author of Critical Issues in Rural Health (Glasgow, Morton, & Johnson 2004). Other publications have focused on small town services and facilities and the effects of social networks and civic structure on quality of life (City & Community 2:2:101-120, 2003), definitions and theories of civic structure (Encyclopedia of Community, 1:179-182,2003), selecting socio-economic metrics for watershed management (Environmental Monitoring & Assessment. 103:83-98) and Renewing Local Watersheds: Community Leaders Guide 2002, 2006.  Research in progress examines civic structure, citizen engagement in watershed decision making, food environments and food insecurity; and the structure of rural environments associated with age-adjusted mortality over time. Dr. Morton currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI). She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Sociology of Environment.
