Mark's recent research has involved the effects of suburbanization upon small farming operations. Most importantly, the research was aimed to show how farmers are able to sustain operations via alternative marketing methods in spite of a growing exodus of small and medium sized farming operations in the Midwest. Currently hes pursuing his Ph.D. in Rural Sociology with a co-major in Sustainable Agriculture, which will focus on increasing small farm viability. Through the diffusion and adoption of sustainable irrigation technology, theoretically small farms will be better suited to maintain their operations in light of unforeseen economic and environmental disasters. Therefore, they may sustain their farms as well as their local communities.
